Tays renewal programme

The final stage of the renewal programme in picture.

The Tays renewal programme is a comprehensive project to renew operational processes with a view towards using new premises to support new kinds of activity. By developing our operational models, we respond to the needs of the future: availability of personnel, increased need for services, patient safety, and quality. The Tays renewal programme, initiated in 2010, is now half-way complete. The most recently renewed premises are in the Tays Central Hospital adult psychiatry building (T), which was opened in January 2024. The next step is the construction of a new building for the child and youth psychiatry services along with the renovation of an extensive old section.

Why is renewal needed?

The hospital’s operations are fragmented and the facilities dating from the '60s are unsuitable for new ways of working. Renewed treatment methods also create new requirements for premises. At the same time, it is necessary to improve productivity in order to have sufficient resources.

The renewal programme is the biggest project in the history of the Kauppi campus

Within the framework of the renewal programme, EUR 1 000 million will be invested between 2025 and 2033. Some 200,000 square metres of new premises will be built for specialised health care services. Furthermore, the accessibility of the Tays Central Hospital area will be improved by constructing about 1,400 new car parking spaces for staff and customers in two parking facilities.

Significant reorganisation and transfer of infrastructure, technology and logistics will be carried out as part of the renewal process, as well as improving resilience to crisis conditions throughout the campus area.

Planning is guided by both needs as well as productivity improvements

Principles guiding operational planning:

  • From intense care to lighter care
  • Concentrating similar activities within larger wholes
  • Growth forecasts and facility planning principles: digitalisation reduces the need for space, but the size of inpatient wards is increasing

Principles of facility planning:

  • Clarity: easily identifiable and dedicated logistical pathways for patients, family, personnel, and materials
  • Convertibility: enables flexible changes of purpose and shared facilities
  • Enables future needs: new technologies and digitalisation
  • Working environment that promotes productivity: uniform operating models, facility solutions, improved working environments, and short distances between units
  • Environment that promotes patient healing: patient experience and rehabilitative surroundings
